5 benefits to distributing your own work online as opposed to selling physical copies
Someone emailed me asking “What are the benefits to distributing your own work online as opposed to selling physical copies?”.
This is the answer I gave:
There are several huge benefits to the point I don’t understand why people say the internet is ruining music. I think it’s actually created a renaissance for small creators. Here are the main benefits:
1. Massively reduced overheads in comparison to manufacturing CDs and LPs. No need to sink budget into pressing, storing and shipping physical records. A digital distributor can handle your online releases for a tiny sum in comparison.
2. You can reach a global audience without the aid of a record label to market you worldwide.
3. Much more freedom to experiment due to the reduced risk of investing in a release. When it only costs a few pounds to release something rather than a few thousand pounds you are free to try new ideas.
4. It’s much faster – I can finish mixing a song in the morning and have it for sale on iTunes in the afternoon. There’s no way to do this on a large scale with CDs.
5. It saves plastic.
