Defending Mac Miller

Rapper Lord Finesse is suing indie rapper Mac Miller for $10m, for using his backing music on a free MP3. Unauthorised sampling and remixing are an integral part of hip hop culture. Without it, hip hop probably wouldn’t have existed in the first place. Lord Finesse constantly uses samples of old jazz and soul artists. What the hell is he thinking by suing Miller? On Twitter he keeps cryptically saying “it’s about the overall picture”, “you don’t see it” and “look deeper” but when challenged on this he refused to explain what he means. I hope for the sake of creativity online and elsewhere that this case collapses…

Hey, why not toss a copy to a few people to drop int bittorrent? I know I’d love a copy, myself. YouTube isn’t the only distribution choice, just the best for commentary like this. Besides, not like he can go after all of us, much as he might try.
